About the Academy

Founded  by bequest of Governor William Dummer in 1763, The Governor’s Academy is the oldest, continuously operating boarding school in the country.

We are a private, coeducational boarding and day school for students in grades 9 – 12. Located in Byfield, Massachusetts, the Academy is only 5 miles from Newburyport and 33 miles from Boston.

Our 450-acre campus is a welcoming community where caring adults and good friends are always close at hand. Our faculty members inspire a lifelong love of learning and an unquenchable curiosity about the world. Here, our students discover new worlds – in intellectual inquiry, the arts, and athletics.

At Governor’s, our students live out concepts of leadership. They find the courage to take risks – and the wisdom to learn from their mistakes. Through it all, they gain confidence in who they are – and the citizen leaders they can be.

Our facilities include a performing arts center, hockey rink, math and science center, and library – all built in the past 15 years. Every building, even those dating back to the 1700s, is thoroughly updated and equipped with the latest technology.
